LAMPO
I was invited by Joevelluto Studio to represent a personal obsession using metal.
I see obsessions as “extremes” that, over time, tend to manifest as their exact opposite.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay Prudence, wrote that for those skating on thin ice, safety lies in speed—a phrase that I also used as the title of my middle school thesis on Futurism at age 13.
The word “zipper” is onomatopoeic, evoking the quick sound of a fast-opening clasp. It is referred to in Italian as “lampo” (lightning), emphasizing the speed inherent to this invention when compared to buttons.
“Lampo” embodies an obsession with speed—speed of action and reaction, of thought and imagination—materialized as a coffee table and a mirror. The action of the zipper, frozen mid-motion, becomes its opposite, a static representation.
In a storm, thunder—a consequence of lightning—by its very nature, always arrives late.
