My recent studies on the history of magic led me to the creation of 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰. 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰 is a refined reinterpretation of the ancient Assassin’s Teapot, a ceramic vessel originally designed in China during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) to discreetly serve poisons at social gatherings. This intriguing object later inspired numerous illusionists throughout history, as well as stage magic performances, including those by Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘩𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦), David Devant (𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘒𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦), and Charles Hoffman (𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘢 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘬 - 𝘈𝘯𝘺 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘍𝘰𝘳). Reversing the original narrative of power and deception, 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰 transforms it into a symbol of pleasure and conviviality. It bridges the concept of the Assassin’s Teapot with the Italian tradition of an “ammazzacaffè.” (literally translated as “coffee killer”) which consists of following one’s coffee at the end of a meal with a liqueur. Blending functionality with mystery, 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰 features a dual-chamber design that allows two different liquids to be poured seamlessly from a single spout. This enables the serving of both “caffè corretto” (coffee with a drop of liquor) and “caffè macchiato” (coffee with a small amount of milk). A hidden compartment within the handle conceals a silk handkerchief with instructions - a tribute to the world of magic and illusion that inspired the project. Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay Prudence, wrote that for those skating on thin ice, safety lies in speed—a phrase that I also used as the title of my middle school thesis on Futurism at age 13. The word “zipper” is onomatopoeic, evoking the quick sound of a fast-opening clasp. It is referred to in Italian as “lampo” (lightning), emphasizing the speed inherent to this invention when compared to buttons. “Lampo” embodies an obsession with speed—speed of action and reaction, of thought and imagination—materialized as a coffee table and a mirror. The action of the zipper, frozen mid-motion, becomes its opposite, a static representation. In a storm, thunder—a consequence of lightning—by its very nature, always arrives late.
